Taken from Lords of Metal

Let me start by complimenting this band. Thanks to the pretty much perfect press kit part of my work became a lot easier. Infinity Minus One is a five-piece band from Boston (USA). Recently they have put out this mini-CD, which is filled with four tracks written in the best Progressive and Hard Rock tradition. ‘At The Doorway Of Existence’ takes you by the hand, and surrounded by rolling drums and a solid wall of guitars you experience the uncertainties in the life of writer/keyboardist Kevin Hammer, sung by Dennis J. Lanza. This singer has a lot of potential and great reach, he is a real promise for the future. The second song on the disc - ‘Face The Face’ - starts somewhat more sober, but along the way you discover more and more subtle details, of the same kind as one can hear in the music of a band like Pendragon. The instrumental piece ‘Independence Day’ is a show of hands from the different instrumentalists. It is varied, skilful, in fact, you could easily associate it with the skills of musical wizards like Dream Theater. Every musician is granted an opportunity to show his stuff, but the song never gets lost in selfish ego-tripping. Now I expected the last song on the album - ‘Architectural Martyr’ – to be the best (save the best for last, right?), but ouch… The guitarist makes quite some mistakes in the first minutes, and the singer tries a bit more than he should. Some keyboards sounds are not chosen very wisely and the mix is a bit messy also. It is a well-written song, no doubt about that, but this version leaves a bit to desired. Furthermore, and maybe that’s because I used to produce myself, it seems the production of the whole disc could have been a lot better. The music sounds flat and lacks freshness. The mix sounds very poor and some sound effects are pretty much ill chosen. This kind of drags the band down, something these guys don’t deserve, judging by their material. If a next album were produced the right way and the singer were to get some good coaching, this band might be the next big thing in Progressive Metal.
