Infinity Minus One come from the US and are a quartet formed in the infamous Berklee Music College - a place I'd really like to visit for a few years! Guess what, they play progressive metal with a few power touches! Their first work, "Tales From The Mobius Strip" is a set of four songs demonstrating their ability to write and orchestrate music. The record begins with "At The Doorway Of Existance", a very interesting song which's main theme will remind you of Metallica's "Fade To Black" with altered timing, but which changes every half minute to a completely new phrase until it is lead to its nice refrain. The arrangements have brought to the front a lot of synths, and this adds to the sound of Infinity Minus One, as it takes them away from the majority of progressive metal bands. The whole sound reminds me mostly of Fates Warning ("A Pleasent Shade Of Gray") and the result is judged as very satisfying. If the singer added some more volume to his vocals, the result would be even better, although his vocals are definitely good. The second track is called "Face To Face" and is not so long as the previous one. The song's verses are enhanced with a strange piano which reminds me of King Crimson's "Islands" and here's the point where the whole sound (and especially the vocals) point at Fates Warning as a major influence! As a whole, the song is good, but I'm afraid the refrain is a bit mediocre and this robs the result of a better overal picture. Next comes the instrumental "Independence Day" and then the band's newest composition "Architectural Martyr", which are not bad but a bit too electronic for my tastes, with too much synth and too much in the forthground. Anyway, the good news is that you can check out the band before ordering their cd, at mp3.com. Give them a try as they sound very interesting, and I'm looking forawrd to their next work, which I'm sure will be even more mature and touching!
